Back from Estonia

Actually, I’m still in Stockholm waiting for my return flight from Tallinn… But as I have some time to kill, I’m already writing a small trip report.

So Tallinn must probably be the most beautiful city I’ve never seen!!! Or at least the old town is.

[Ok, I’m back in Brussels for about a week now…Time to continue with this post 🙂 ]

So the old town is full of medieval buildings: old dungeons, remparts, … When you are walking in the small streets, it’s like you came back 600 years in the past:

But aside of this external medieval aspect, the city is very modern, with a lot of interesting pubs and restaurants, many of them offering wireless internet access. Unfortunately, the laptop from my work isn’t equiped with Wifi…And I didn’t bring my personal one! 😐

Alcohol seems to be a great tradition in Estonia, and it’s going from beers to vodka, through some liquors. Personally, I tasted some local beers (Le Coq, Saku, …) and brought some vodka ( viru valge – not tasted yet) and liquor (vana tallinn – should have brought 5 liters of it!!!! To good!) back home.

I stayed in Reval Hotel Central ***, nice simple hotel, with great choice of food for the breakfast, and covered by Wifi. There are a lot of others hotels in Tallinn, either in the new city or in the old town.

Estonia, and Tallinn in particular, is a destination I would recommend to anyone. If you are a EU citizen, you national ID is enough to enter the country, but the Euro is still not used there… Happy travelling! 😉

Spa

I spent the last week-end in Spa, a small city located in the Fagnes (Belgium). It is well known for its Formula 1 race track “Spa-Francorchamps” but also for its thermes, where I also spent some time. It’s a big complex of baths filled with thermal water at 32°C, in which you can enjoy an amazing view on the valley! There is also a lot of water games, whirlpools, sauna’s, hammams, …

The thermes are located on top of a hill. You can choose to go there using the funicular from the center of Spa, or by foot, following a little path in the hill (or alternatively, you can drive to it 😉 ):

There’s also a casino in Spa, if you are in the mood for loosing some money (I clearly wasn’t):

For sure, it is a great place to relax :yummy:!!!

Carless + Patrimony Day in Brussels

This day was a special day in Brussels. Once again, no cars were allowed to enter the city, making all streets, boulevards, lanes, … free for bikers, skaters, rollerbladers and walkers! And once again, it was the most dangerous day of the year to do bicycle in Brussels! No one cares about red lights, trams, other bicycles, or busses!!! Total anarchy on the streets!!!

Aside of this “carless” day, the Patrimony days took place the whole week-end, during which you can visit some old and fabulous monuments. This year, a lot of schools and swimming pools were made available to the public.

Personnally, I visited an old guild of crossbowmen: “Le Grand Serment royal et de Saint-Georges des Arbalétriers de Bruxelles”. It exists since 1381, and these people still train shooting with a crossbow:
