First Wallpaper

Here it is, my first homemade wallpaper…

chicago preview

Made in Gimp, from a picture my girlfriend took in Chicago.

Open Office 2!!!

At least!!! Open Office 2 is available!!! It’s still the binary beta version, but it looks much greater than the old-fashioned 1.1.5.

I downloaded it from openoffice.org, copied it to /usr/portage/distfiles, and then emerged it. I started it…and then just had to wait about 200 sec before seeing the splash window…

In fact, you either have to run a proper Java Runtime Environment (blackdown seems to give problems), or to uncheck the Java option in the preferences (which also take seconds to perform…) to make it start faster.

Now it takes:

harck@anger ~ $ time oocalc2

real 0m2.558s
user 0m1.771s
sys 0m0.153s

…and it looks great 😉

Just have to find out what Java really allows (or disallows in my case).

Book Festival

This weekend I went to the Brussels Book Festival. It’s a big festival where you can find a lot of new but discounted books! To my great disapointment, the only books about Linux were “O’reilly Red Hat 8”, “Red Hat 8 complete” and something else containing “Red Hat”… Also, I didn’t find any book about C programming.

On the opposite, there were plenty of books about Win XP, .NET, and other shity stuff.

I still bought three books:

  • Security Complete: a book about security in general, and applied to Win and Linux.
  • Hacking Exposed: explains some hacking techniques…just to learn how to protect against it, I swear!
  • Web Graphics for non-designer: how to design a good site when you sucks in creative tasks like me 😛

I started reading the second and last ones… Comments on these are coming…
